Mother's Day is a=20 wonderful day of the year, as is Father's Day, ANZAC Day, = Christmas=20 Day, Good Friday etc. What do all these days have in common = and what=20 makes them so special?

Quite=20 simply, they all represent sacrifice of one sort or another. = Secondly, each of these days are a celebration of 'others'. = You see=20 the world does not revolve around you or me, but we are all = on the=20 planet together and we are all part of our father in = heaven's=20 wonderful family.

 

A=20 great man, after his death, had the words 'others' inscribed = on his=20 tombstone. Perhaps this word could be one of the reasons the = word=20 'mother' was voted the most beautiful word in the English = language.=20 A poll conducted by www.britishcouncil.org=20  with over 35,000 people voting from around the world = found=20 that the top ten beautiful words were:

 

1) = Mother

2) = Passion

3) = Smile

4) Love

5) = Eternity

6) = Fantastic

7) = Destiny

8) = Freedom

9) = Liberty

10) = Tranquillity

 

The=20 word 'father' did not make it into the Top 70 Words. For = this reason=20 the Fatherhood Foundation exists. We are all in the process = of=20 lifting the bar on fatherhood and in due course we can = change these=20 sorts of perceptions for the better. For the time being, = mothers are=20 still at the top of the pile!

 

Carl=20 Bialik, from the Wall Street Journal wrote a very = interesting=20 article about the monetary value of a mother's work in the=20 family.

 

Flowers, a card and dinner won't cut it for = Mother's Day this=20 year. If you really want to show your working mom you = appreciate how=20 much she has done for you in the past year, write her a = check for=20 $85,876. If she's a stay-at-home mom, the bill comes to=20 US$134,121.

 

That=20 is how much it would cost to pay professionals to replace a = mother's=20 work at home, according to an estimate from Salary.com Inc., = a=20 compensation consulting firm. But questions have been raised = about=20 the study, whose flaws begin with an online survey that = covered only=20 400 moms and continue with questionable estimates on how = different=20 motherly tasks should be valued -- any time spent acting as=20 "household CEO," for instance, was valued at a $600,000 = annual=20 rate.

 

Whatever the case we are all aware of the enormous = sacrifice=20 and workload involved in being a mother. My friend Louis = D'Alpuget=20 has described a woman's sacrificial love for her family as=20 covenantal. He maintains, "Women are covenantal in their=20 relationships from birth whereas men are contractual in = their=20 relationships." Women are happy to be defined by their = relationships=20 whereas men tend to = want to be=20 defined by their job or their earning capacity. Women can = love=20 unconditionally, especially when it comes to their children, = but men=20 seem to have to learn these skills. Maybe that is why = Mother's Day=20 is one of the most celebrated days of the year. Whatever the = case,=20 we can all learn from our wives and also join with our = children and=20 fellow Australians in applauding the mothers of Australia. = They are=20 doing an awesome job. The Fatherhood Foundation honours and = thanks=20 you.

Altruistic Love of=20 a Father

It is nearly forty years ago since = the first=20 known father, an Australian, applied for legal custody of a = baby=20 girl and was subsequently grant legal Custody of his baby = daughter=20 by the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

 

Though this father was granted = legal custody of=20 his baby daughter by the Supreme Court of New South Wales, = the=20 Department of Community Welfare and the Department of Social = Security of the Governments of the day refused to accept the = Supreme=20 Court of New South Wales ruling of a father being given the=20 opportunity and equal rights to raise his baby = daughter.

 

The father was refused any = assistance and=20 received no Child Maintenance as the mother refused to pay = any, and=20 the Department of Community Welfare and the Social Security=20 Department would not force the mother, who deserted the = child, to=20 pay child support as she was a woman. Nor was he granted a = single=20 parent's pension or the equivalent pension that was = automatically=20 granted to single mothers and their children.

 

Throughout the eight year period = that his young=20 daughter was diagnosed as seriously ill and dying, he was = not=20 offered any support or financial assistance whatsoever from = anybody.=20 Forced to give up his career, this father, his baby daughter = and his=20 mother had to survive on his mother's aged = pension.

 

Due to the harassing attitudes by = the Child=20 Welfare Department and their determination to seize his baby = daughter at any = given opportunity,=20 the father was forced to fly 4,100 miles over a period of 10 = hours=20 and 50 minutes over night from Sydney to Perth; the father = would=20 then fly back to Sydney on the same night.  This journey was = undertaken=20 many times in order to hide his baby daughter in the care of = mother,=20 to avoid his baby daughter being made a state ward, as this = was the=20 policy of the day.

 

That Father was Leslie James Gray, = now living=20 in Perth, Western Australia.

Titanic Chivalry

It was=20 94 years ago this month that the unsinkable Titanic collided = with a=20 North Atlantic iceberg. = Of the=20 1,327 passengers on board, 73% of the women made it to the=20 lifeboats, while only 7% of the men survived. That fateful = night,=20 the bodies of 702 men settled into their watery=20 graves.

 

Within=20 days of the tragedy, women set out to build a fitting = memorial.=20 First Lady Helen Taft donated the first dollar, explaining = she was=20 glad to do this in gratitude to the chivalry of American=20 manhood.  Of = course not=20 everyone was thrilled. Some argued that the fund-raising = efforts=20 were diverting attention away from the crusade to grant = women the=20 right to vote. One politically-correct person argued, Why = not,=20 instead of having the memorial solely for the heroes of the = wreck,=20 have it also for the = heroines!

 

But=20 the grateful ladies persisted. In May of 1931 Mrs. William = Howard=20 Taft unveiled the imposing 15-foot memorial, featuring a man = in a=20 Christ-like crucifix pose. The statue was located in a = splendid=20 venue on the banks of the Potomac=20 River, just a little downstream from Rock = Creek.  At the ceremony, = Congressman=20 Robert Luce of Massachusetts pointed = out that the=20 survival of so many women was the reason for this memorial = and our=20 presence here today. Other speeches hailed the chivalry and = the men=20 who protected their families by sacrificing their own lives. = Some=20 would say that the chivalry that is commemorated by the = Titanic=20 Memorial is an anachronistic hold-over from a fading era of = male=20 privilege.

 

But=20 the truth is, chivalry is one of the strongest impulses in = the male=20 psyche. And despite the feminist browbeating of men who hold = open=20 doors, chivalry is very much alive and well.  Chivalry is one of = the most=20 potent forces that has shaped the course of human history. = Chivalry=20 impelled medieval men to rise up and shield their womenfolk = from the=20 Mongol invaders. Chivalry rings throughout the Declaration = of=20 Independence, especially its stirring conclusion: we pledge = our=20 lives, our fortunes, and our sacred=20 honor.

 

One of=20 the great icons of American culture is the southern = gentleman who=20 would freely duel to the death in defence of womanly virtue, = or the=20 Rhett Butler-types who spare nothing so their Scarlett = O'Haras can=20 save their splendid plantations.  Give chivalry its = due for=20 the fact that in the United Kingdom, women are allowed to = retire at=20 age 60, while men must sweat and toil another five = years.  It's chivalry, of = course,=20 that motivates legislators to pass laws that exempt women = from the=20 military draft.

 

Even=20 in the heat of battle, chivalry rules the day. Remember = Jessica=20 Lynch, that G.I. Jane-wannabe who passed out after her truck = took a=20 wrong turn behind Iraqi enemy lines? Nine men in her company = were=20 shot in the head, execution-style. But when word filtered = back that=20 Lynch was being held in a remote hospital, an elite assault = unit of=20 Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and Air Force Pararescue Jumpers=20 volunteered to come to the aid of this 19-year-old damsel in = distress.

 

Try to=20 match that, Sir Galahad! =20 Chivalry plays out every day in our families and = communities.=20 That's why men's earnings shoot up as soon as they get = married, so=20 they can provide for their wives and children. These men = accept=20 risky or lonely jobs like asbestos removal or long-haul = truck=20 driving.  And = these men=20 work overtime so their dearly-beloveds can live in their=20 well-appointed dream = houses.

 

And=20 here's the amazing part, these men don't complain.  In December 1965 = President=20 Lyndon Johnson was scheduled to turn the first shovelful of = dirt for=20 the gleaming Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  But the Titanic = Memorial=20 stood in the way of progress. =20 So the statute was removed to an obscure Potomac = River=20 backwater.  = It's not on=20 many tourist maps. But if you ask around, someone can = probably point=20 you to it.  = When you=20 arrive, you won't find any faded flowers placed by grieving = widows.=20 But your efforts will be amply rewarded by the poignant = words=20 inscribed on the pedestal: To the brave men who perished in = the=20 wreck of the Titanic April 15, 1912. They gave their lives = that=20 women and children might be=20 saved.

You=20 don't have to be crazy to kill yourself, says a men's health = expert.

 

Professor John Macdonald said many men who = committed=20 suicide had no history of mental illness or depression. He = said=20 suicide prevention strategies required societal change, not = just=20 medical solutions.

 

"Despite what many people believe, you don't = have to=20 be crazy to kill yourself," said the Professor of Primary = Health at=20 the University of Western=20 = Sydney.

 

"It's=20 often society, not initially mental health problems, which = drives=20 men to kill themselves." Men make up 80 per cent of = Australian=20 deaths by suicide, and most are aged 25 to 44. The rate has = been=20 rising since 1979. "We've known for some years it's men in = their=20 middle years killing themselves," Prof Macdonald=20 said.

 

"We=20 seem as a nation to have turned our eyes away from this=20 fact.

 

"It's=20 time social factors, like family breakdown and unemployment, = are=20 considered alongside the need to improve mental health = resources."=20 Family break-up and separation from children were common = causes,=20 with separated men six times more likely to kill themselves = than=20 separated women.

 

"In=20 our society, whatever people say, many men end up with very = little=20 contact with their children and that is recorded as putting = them at=20 risk. Of course that can happen to women too," Prof = Macdonald=20 said.

 

"People might then resort to drugs, lose = their jobs=20 and they can be contributing=20 factors.

 

"A=20 purely medical response to suicide prevention hasn't been = enough to=20 reverse the horrific = statistics.

 

"It is=20 controversial because it means moving things from a medical=20 perspective and it's a lot harder to deal with social=20 aspects."

 

Prof=20 Macdonald was a key speaker at a suicide prevention forum in = Sydney this week. = Tasmanian suicide=20 prevention officer Tim Johnson, of POSITIVE, said positive = steps=20 could make a difference.

 

"The=20 challenge really has to be to recognise what it is men in = our=20 society need, coming up with services that fit them rather = than=20 making men fit what's available," he=20 said.

It was = disappointing to=20 read in Melbourne's The Age newspaper (Tuesday 9/5/06) Farah = Farouque's article captioned, 'One for boomers, breeders and = PM's=20 heartland.'  = Whether it=20 was the journalist herself, or an Age sub-editor, who used = the word=20 'breeders' to describe parents, was disappointing and could = be=20 construed by many as offensive. One wonders if Ms Farouque = is a=20 parent herself, as it's highly unlikely she would talk about = herself=20 in such a manner.

 

The Age = appears to want to=20 disenfranchise a whole class of Australians who contribute = to our=20 national well being through personal sacrifice in raising = the next=20 generation.  = The=20 pejorative term 'breeders' is regularly used by the Lesbian = and Gay=20 community to disparage heterosexuals parents.  There is no place = in a=20 respected publication for such sloppy journalism.  Come on Age, lift = your game.=20

I think the = source of many=20 evils for failed marriages with the devastating effects for = women,=20 children and particularly men is the power that men-hating = feminists=20 have acquired over the law, the courts, the universities, = etc. That=20 is not news for you, obviously.

Below is the = text I have=20 been circulating over the last few days in particular to = politicians=20 and hopefully an important source of support: the bishops of = the=20 Anglican and Catholic churches in=20 Australia.

I met Peter = Ryan last year=20 for the first time.  = He=20 is very sharp and has a great sense of=20 humour.

You should = enjoy this=20 story.

 

Kitamoto was = the man Peter=20 met up with in the Lae International Hotel in the mid 1980's = on one=20 of his 25 trips back to PNG over the=20 years.

 

There were 3 = Japanese men=20 across the restaurant. =20 One spoke English and asked him what he was doing in=20 PNG.

 

He told him he = had been=20 here during the War in 1943 up in the Sarawaged Range behind = the=20 Japanese lines.  = When=20 this was translated the elder gentleman across the table = leaned=20 forward and asked through the interpreter what his call sign = was.  When = Peter told=20 him though the interpreter the man became very excited and = jumped up=20 and bowed to him and went to shake Peter's hand.  He told Peter = though the=20 interpreter.  = He had=20 tried for 2 years to hunt him down with his men and kill=20 him.

 

Peter said to = me. "How can=20 you continue to hate the Japanese after something like = that?"  " He was doing his = duty as I=20 was doing mine.  = Even=20 though he organised the attack which killed my close friend, = I had=20 to let it go then."

 

He is = presently working=20 for the Ombudsman in Vic. trying to get put a stop to = excessive=20 corruption in the Police Force=20 there.
